Our New Flooring: Details, Selections, & Installation

HOME PROJECTS & RENOVATIONS

Our Home Flooring Renovation With The Flooring Factory

This summer we decided to tackle a few of the projects on our home wishlist! After living with our solid oak hardwood floors for five years, they had taken a beating. Between scratches, gauges, and rough patches in our flooring, Trevor and I were more than ready to replace them. With a dog and three little boys running around, our floors looked as if they were 15-20 years old.

In May, I started our flooring project with Roger from The Flooring Factory, and I had such a great experience. With Roger being based in California, we did the entire process over Zoom / FaceTime, and it went seamlessly. I started by ordering samples and moving them from room to room in our home—both during the daytime and at night—which allowed me to ensure that I loved the finish we went with and that, for content purposes, it would look good in all locations of our home.

Once we made our selection, we moved forward with measuring and ordering all of the floors for our entire home—first and second floors! We went with the Evolved Series by McMillan in the color Niobe. It’s the most gorgeous laminate floors with a warm honey look that I absolutely love.

Aside from the look of the flooring, we went with this series do to the durability and longevity it promises. These floors are crafted using patented Micro Fiberboard technology allowing a 300 Hour Waterproof base. These laminate floors are meant to go far beyond the expectations of normal laminate floors. They offer resistance to water damage, ensuring overall higher quality, durability, and peace of mind.

THE PROCESS

INSTALLATION

With our home being on a raised foundation, we had the option to lay our new laminate flooring directly over our existing one. With this option, we skipped the demo process completely, and also ensured that should we ever want to revert back to our original solid oak flooring, we can, with no damage to the flooring.

Our Niobe straight planks (60″ in length, 9.5″ in width) were installed through a floating process. These planks are 15mm—thick, padded, and resin-injected, making them, again, waterproof to the core. No seepage between any seams or edges.

In a few areas of our home, we went with a Herringbone pattern, which is now offered in the Niobe finish. We went with this option for both our entryway and our primary bathroom/closet. For extra stability, we glued these planks in place.

For a true hardwood flooring look, we skipped T-Molding between doors and long runs by cutting and gluing boards as transitions. On our stairwell, we used Duraseal Silvered Gray, which was the closest match to the Niobe finish of the McMillan laminate. Note: These results will vary if you are not placing this stain over red oak floors.
