How to…
Create a Layered, Textured Bed
I’m sure at some point you’ve walked into a furniture or bedding store and wondered how their beds are so plush and soft while yours looks like a deflated balloon. For starters, they double up (sometimes triple!) down comforters in a single duvet. This post will show you how to get the same at home without having to buy a million comforters 🙂

HOW TO
Order of how I make our bed:
- Fitted sheet: I usually keep the flat sheet off because it never ends up staying on the bed anyways
- Quilt: I pull the quilt up about 2/3 of the way to the headboard
- Duvet: I fold ours almost into thirds which crates a lofty look at the end of the bed
- Bed blanket: this is the same size as our bed (king/cal king) so that it COULD cover the whole bed and drapes easily down both sides. I tend to keep this a lighter material too. I make sure the texture and/or print varies from the duvet to keep that textured look.
- Bed throw: this is just a throw blanket I’ll drape across the blanket or just draping to one side of our bed. I make sure this is a different texture or pattern than our bed blanket.
- King sleeping pillows: (we have tempurpedic) lay flat across the bed on both sides
- King shams: I place these right on top of our sleeper pillows
- 23×23” pillows: I use 3 of these to lean against our sleeping pillows and shams. I don’t always like using euro size because it can take up too much space and overpower your bed.
- Accent pillows: I use varying textures, colors, and sizes for throw pillows. Here I have two 22×22”, one 20×20”, and one lumbar 14×20”.
